Beginner GIS for Ecologists

About this Workshop:

This seven-hour workshop will serve as an introduction to using spatial data in a geographic information system platform with specific examples using the ArcGIS platform. Participants will learn fundamental concepts of using geographic information and gain experience applying those concepts to accomplish tasks that might be conducted by a biologist (ex. uploading data, making maps, spatially investigating patterns in datasets). The course will be a combination of lectures and hands-on exercises using examples that might be encountered by ecologists.

This course will introduce and familiarize the participant to spatial data in a geographic information system platform. The participant will receive lecture-based material as well as hands-on exercises to gain an understanding of working with ArcGIS. The participant should be able to import data, manipulate, and create maps by the end of this course. Participants will need to bring their own laptop; a temporary software download will be provided prior to workshop.

About the Presenter:

Kayla Key brings more than eight years of GIS experience ranging from terrestrial to aquatic environments. She is currently finishing her PhD at Tennessee Tech University in the Cooperative Fishery Research Unit. Kayla is excited to share the capabilities of ArcGIS with other scientists to help them better answer important questions.
