With substantial technological advancements over the past couple of decades, the ways in which people communicate have drastically changed and the outlets by which information is shared and obtained (often simultaneously) have branched in various directions. As such, the landscapes of academia and science have shifted and continue to shift in new and exciting ways. How scientists interact with one another, the ways that scientific information is disseminated, and methods of scientific outreach/education have changed, in many ways becoming more efficient. One way in which scientific networking and outreach have changed is through the advent of social media. The use of social media has not only allowed scientists to engage in more efficient public outreach and education, but has provided a unique platform for communication and networking within the scientific community.

Although often positive, there are negative implications of social media as well. For example, keeping social media sites up-to-date can be time consuming and distracting. Given the increasing interest and expansion of social media among the scientific community, this webinar will provide researchers, scientific professionals, and students with the skills and tools to enhance their professional outreach through the use of social media. In general, this webinar will introduce various social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, blogging, etc.) and provide tips on how to utilize them to enhance outreach and networking. The webinar will also explore how to optimize the use of social media for the research needs and goals of both early-career (students and recent graduates) and well established scientists.

More specifically, the webinar will address aspects of social media and science using the following structure:

  1. Social media platforms
  2. Blogging and website building
  3. How to use social media for science

Speaker Profile

Jeff is a newly-minted PhD from the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of New Brunswick in Atlantic Canada. He currently serves as a postdoctoral fellow at the Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island. Jeff’s research interests lie in the biological effects of oceanic climate change. In particular, Jeff is interested in the behavioral, physiological, and ecosystem-wide effects of ocean warming, acidification, and hypoxia, with a fondness for the spineless. Alongside his biological and ecological research, Jeff is highly interested in the ways that scientists and educators can use social media to their advantage. He currently heads the CERF social media team, of which he has been a member since 2013, and has delivered numerous talks and workshops on the benefits of using social media scientifically, including the “Social Media and Science” workshop at CERF 2015. In addition, Jeff has published both peer reviewed and non-peer reviewed articles regarding the use of social media in higher education.
