ASLO 2019 Aquatic Sciences Meeting
Saturday, February 24, 2018 to Thursday, March 01, 2018
Category: Affiliate Society Meetings

Waco, TX -- The Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) is planning its 2019 Aquatic Sciences Meeting over the dates of 24 February – 1 March 2019 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, USA. The meeting will take place at the Puerto Rico Convention Center. Over 1,500 freshwater and salt water scientists, researchers, educators, policy makers, and students are expected to attend.

Plans to meet in San Juan continue in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria that struck the island on 20 September 2017 and made direct landfall just 25 miles from the city of San Juan. The ASLO Board along with meeting co-chairs, Debbie Bronk and John Downing, decided that by continuing plans to meet in San Juan, ASLO would be doing its part to move the economy of Puerto Rico and showing its appreciation for the strength of the residents who call this beautiful destination home.

A wealth of topics will be discussed at the meeting, many stemming from key areas of importance to the area itself at this crucial time – the role of science at the center of all economic, societal and environmental recovery and development efforts, studies on renewable energy, environmental sustainability, clean water, and rebuilding and maintaining terrestrial ecosystems.

Science and innovative problem-solving are keys to creating a better and more resilient world, and this speaks truth to the residents of Puerto Rico. While ASLO’s meeting in San Juan will benefit Puerto Rico for the short-term, the outcomes of the ASLO 2019 Aquatic Sciences Meeting can impact the island for the long-term.  This presents an excellent opportunity for ASLO to showcase how they are doing their part to train scientists in communication to the public and to teach effective research skills to future generations. As with all ASLO meetings, organized activities will be available that will allow participants to use culturally-relevant projects and strategies to make science more engaging.
