Submit An Abstract

The CERF 2019 Scientific Program Committee (SPC) invites you to submit an abstract for a poster presentation for CERF 2019 during our “late-breaking” poster submission period from 5-16 August 2019. The Federation is committed to bringing scientists and students from around the world together to exchange information and ideas about the science and management of coastal ecosystems. Our Federation conferences provide outstanding opportunities for professionals at all stages in their career for continuing education and development.

Please consider submitting an abstract that examines new findings within CERF’s traditional scientific, education, and management disciplines and encourages interaction among coastal and estuarine scientists and environmental management professionals.

Posters are an essential part of the scientific program. While most poster sessions will be closely linked to oral sessions, a limited number may be organized as a stand-alone session at the discretion of the session chair. Our goal is to provide high-quality poster sessions that are equal to oral sessions in their ability to provide exposure, participation, and feedback.

The SPC also encourages abstracts that promote intellectually stimulating discussions related to our theme, including:

  • Enhancing scientific relevance by integrating across disciplines
  • Extracting new information from existing data
  • Managing working coastlines and their multiple uses/resources across the natural and sociological continuum
  • Readiness through communication and management of threats
  • Responding to global climate change
  • Cultural heritage and coastal humanities
  • Diverse audiences

A list of CERF 2019 special and general sessions is available at https://cerf.confex.com/cerf/2019/webprogrampreliminary/start.html.

CERF 2019 Poster Presentation Guidelines

Poster sessions are an essential component of CERF conferences and provide participants with a valuable opportunity to share their research, communicate about scientific advancements and network with colleagues.

The CERF 2019 Organizing Committee proposes CERF attendees to consider using a new type of poster design that improves the way we communicate science to scientists with different levels of interest and expertise.

The four main design components are:

  1. An extremely large takeaway message.
  2. A structured and condensed description of the work placed in a sidebar on the left.
  3. Further details placed in a sidebar on the right to satisfy the curiosity of experts.
  4. A QR code in the bottom linking the poster to additional information (e.g., data, pictures, videos, webpages, …).

See the following templates and a tutorial video made by Mike Morrison (@mikemorrison). Discussions on the topic can also be found here.

An alternate layout is as follows:

LOCATION & SCHEDULE

All Posters will be on display in the South Hall and assigned to one of two sessions.

Poster Session 1 is scheduled for Monday, 4 November 2019 from 4:30 pm – 7:00 pm, while Poster Session 2 is scheduled for Wednesday, 6 November 2019 from 4:30 pm – 7:00 pm.

Poster session presentation day assignments will be distributed by 3 September. Poster positions will be sent to all presenters in October. Presenters are asked to stand by their poster during their assigned presentation time and are also encouraged to be present during coffee breaks, and lunch hours.

Our goal is to give your poster as much exposure as possible so you can make the most of your participation at CERF 2019. If you cannot be present during your assigned time, please put a note by your poster stating when you will be available to answer questions.

  • The set-up of posters assigned to Session 1 will take place on Monday, 4 November from 8 to 10:30 am, while take-down must occur at the conclusion of the Poster Session on Tuesday, 5 November (between 7:00-7:30 pm).
  • The set-up of posters assigned to Session 2 will take place on Wednesday, November 6 from 8 to 10:30 am, while take-down must occur at the conclusion of the Poster Session on Thursday, 7 November (between 7:00-7:30 pm).

Any posters not taken-down on 5 November and 7 November by 7:30 pm will be removed and held at the Registration Desk in the South Hall Foyer until 8 November at 10:00 am. After this time, any unclaimed posters will be recycled.

The South Hall will be open to conference attendees from:

 Sunday, 3 November 2019 | 8:00 am – 10:00 pm
Monday, 4 November 2019 | 9:30 am – 7:00 pm
Tuesday, 5 November 2019 | 9:30 am – 7:00 pm
Wednesday, 6 November 2019 | 9:30 am – 7:00 pm

Mounting materials and a map will be provided at the Poster Information Booth inside the South Hall. The location of your poster will also be advertised in the conference program and a directional map will be displayed in the poster hall.

There is no electricity available at individual poster stations. If you intend to use a tablet, laptop or other electronic devices during your presentation, please be sure the batteries are fully charged before your presentation time.

Poster Printing. Presenters are responsible for creating and printing their own posters. For authors who would prefer to have their posters printed in Mobile, the following local businesses offer poster printing services:

DIMENSIONS

Each poster will be displayed on 8-foot (2.44-meters) wide by 4-foot (1.22-meters) high boards with a 2-inch (5-centimeter) metal frame around the perimeter. Posters should not exceed 91-inches (2.31-meters) wide by 45-inches (1.14-meters) in height to fit within those dimensions. Mounting materials will be provided.

Lightning Talks at CERF 2019

Lightning talks follow a standard format that encourages short, engaging presentations that focus on the key points of the research. Each talk consists of 20 slides that auto-advance every 15 seconds, for a total of five minutes. This style of presentation was introduced in past CERF conferences and some of our regional Affiliate Societies have also successfully incorporated the format into their meetings. These talks have been highly effective in distilling and communicating the key results and conclusions of varied scientific studies. The best talks emphasized why the study was done, along with results and conclusions, with less time spent on methods.

CERFers On The Run

CERFers On The Run is an informal running club that gets together to run and exercise throughout the cities that the CERF Biennial Conference visits. This year, the CERFers On The Run will be meeting from 6:15 AM to 7:15 AM before the oral sessions start, Monday through Thursday.

Each day, there will be two different group runs, consisting of a long (about 3 miles) and short (about 1 mile) run. We will meet in the courtyard of the Renaissance Mobile Riverview Plaza Hotel at 6:15 AM and do 10-15 minutes of stretching before starting the run. Everyone will receive a ticket for each day they participate to enter to win a running-inspired gift basket!

All of the runs include landmarks throughout Mobile, consisting of Mobile historical landmarks and sites. Other routes will include popular downtown locations to explore during conference downtime.

Check out the running routes below, get stretched out, and let's go for a run!
