CERF 2015 Workshops

Pre-registration is now closed. If space is available, you may purchase tickets for workshops onsite at the registration desk at the Oregon Convention Center.

All workshops will take place on Sunday, November 8, except for New Research Vessel Infrastructure for Estuarine and Coastal Science, which will take place on Monday, November 9. Hurry to register - some spaces are limited! Sign up and purchase tickets for these events during registration. If you have already registered and want to purchase a ticket, please call the CERF office at (206) 209-5262 to add the event to your registration.

Beginning Videography for Science Professionals (Limit 20 participants)
9 am – 5 pm | $50 - includes boxed lunch
This full day workshop is designed to teach participants the basics of planning, shooting, editing, and publishing an effective and professional science video.


Social Media and Science
9 am – 11:30 am | $25

This workshop will provide researchers, scientific professionals, and students with the skills and tools to enhance their professional outreach through the use of social media.


Demystifying the Peer-Review Process: A Guide for Reviewers
1:30 pm – 3:30 pm | $25

This workshop is a proactive step toward mitigating bad reviewing habits and can help improve the integrity and transparency of the peer review process for all involved.


The Academic Job Search: From A to Z
9 am – 12 pm |$15
The workshop will describe how academic positions are created, an overview of the job search process and its timeline, and strategies for applying for academic positions at different types of colleges and universities.


Tutorial on Scientific Writing and Publishing
10:30 am – 12 pm | $25

This 90-minute workshop is geared for students and others with little or no experience writing and publishing scientific articles.


Quality Control and Management of Continuous, High-Frequency, Biogeochemical Sensors
 
(Limit 30 participants)
9 am – 2:30 pm | $50 - Includes transportation and boxed lunch

This workshop will focus on instrumental operations, operating procedures, and will include site-specific procedures developed to improve data reliability, quality, and utility in contrasting settings.


Business Basics for Scientists
1:30 pm – 3 pm | $25

The difficult job market for PhD scientists has forced many from more traditional academic paths to look for opportunities in industry positions. This workshop will include talks from entrepreneurs and others describing their journey from academia to industry and general advice from scientists entering the private work force.


Remotely Mapping Areal and Depth Distributions of Estuarine/Near-Coastal SAV
1:30 pm – 5 pm | $25

This workshop will address research and measurement techniques forinvestigating challenges of Sea Level Rise (SLR) to Rooted Submerged Aquatic Vegetation habitats (SAV) in estuarine and near-coastal ecosystems.

 

New Research Vessel Infrastructure for Estuarine and Coastal Science

This workshop will be a forum for sharing information on new research vessels being constructed for the US academic fleet coordinated by the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS). Information will be provided on the UNOLS mission, scheduling and vessel access.
