About the Webinar

LGBT+ individuals provide vital contributions to coastal and estuarine research and management, but they also face discrimination and institutional barriers that result in severe professional and personal costs. For example, LGBT+ scientists are 30% more likely to experience workplace harassment than their non-LGBT+ colleagues and 47% more likely to consider leaving the discipline altogether. Coastal research in particular poses unique additional concerns for LGBT+ individuals including extensive time in the field and work in remote locations. Building LGBT+ support structures ultimately improve coastal and marine science as a discipline, but it requires concentrated effort and concrete actions.

This webinar provides an overview of the barriers currently in place that create an unsupportive environment for LGBT+ coastal researchers and puts forth clear recommendations for institutional and individual actions that can not only dismantle those barriers but generate an inclusive, equitable system.
